Cashback Loans Survey Finds 44% of Americans Have No Emergency Savings

Nearly half of U.S. adults report having no emergency savings, according to America's Emergency Savings Report 2026, a national survey of 3,000 U.S. adults conducted by 3 Gem Research & Insights and commissioned by Cashback Loans. The report examines how prepared Americans are for unexpected expenses such as medical bills, car repairs, delayed paychecks, and broken appliances, and explores household responses to rising living costs.

Among the key findings, 44% of respondents said they have no emergency savings at all. For those who do save, the cushion is often thin: 17% of emergency savers have less than $1,000 set aside. The financial strain is evident in other areas as well. In the previous 12 months, 37% of respondents borrowed money to cover essential living expenses. Inflation has forced 42% to reduce grocery spending. Moreover, 69% say achieving financial security is harder today than it was five years ago, and 22% do not expect to feel financially secure at all.

When Americans need money for essentials, they turn to a variety of sources rather than one dominant option. Relatives were the most common source at 42%, followed by credit cards at 35%, friends at 34%, and payday loans or cash advance services at 23%. Respondents could report more than one source. This reliance on informal networks and high-cost borrowing underscores the precarious financial position of many households.

The report also asked respondents to select the annual household income range they believe would allow them to feel financially secure. The calculated average of those responses was $300,009, though answers varied widely from $20,000-$50,000 to $900,001-$1,000,000. Thirty-five percent chose an income below $100,000, and 51% chose $200,000 or less. This gap between perceived security needs and actual earnings highlights the financial pressure many families face.

Eric Otten, Personal Finance Expert at Cashback Loans, said, "These findings show that many households are working hard to stay on track while having very little cushion for the unexpected. We hope this research gives consumers, journalists and policymakers a clearer picture of the pressure families are facing."

The report is descriptive rather than prescriptive but highlights general practices consistent with its findings: build savings gradually starting with a realistic amount, know your essential monthly expenses, plan ahead for emergencies, compare borrowing options on total cost, fees, repayment timing, and the consequences of missed payments, and revisit your budget when costs change. The report is intended to serve as an annual benchmark for tracking changes in emergency savings, borrowing, and financial confidence over time.

The survey was conducted between July 6, 2026, and August 10, 2026, by 3 Gem Research & Insights, a market research firm specializing in custom B2B and B2C surveys.

The implications of this report are significant for businesses, policymakers, and consumers. With a large portion of Americans lacking even a small emergency fund, unexpected expenses can quickly escalate into debt cycles. Financial institutions may see continued demand for short-term credit, while policymakers might use these findings to advocate for financial literacy programs or safety-net improvements. For consumers, the report serves as a wake-up call to prioritize saving, even in small increments, and to carefully evaluate borrowing choices.
