CEO: Operational Excellence Starts With Strong Internal Communication

RIDLEY PARK, PA – Nick Miccarelli, CEO of DELGO Community Transit, is urging organizations to prioritize internal communication, asserting that consistent collaboration and clearly defined expectations often distinguish organizations that prevent problems from those that merely react to them. Drawing on over 25 years in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, along with his experience in public office and executive leadership, Miccarelli says effective communication is not just about sharing information; it's about ensuring every member understands the mission, their responsibilities, and how their work supports the larger objective.

“People often think operational excellence comes from having the newest tools or the biggest budget,” Miccarelli said. “In my experience, it starts with communication. When people understand the mission and trust the flow of information, organizations perform better.”

Research supports this view. A Gallup report indicates that employees who clearly understand what is expected of them are significantly more likely to be engaged in their roles. Additionally, findings from the Project Management Institute show that poor communication is a contributing factor in many unsuccessful projects, highlighting the importance of consistent information sharing across teams.

Miccarelli believes these lessons apply to organizations of every size, from nonprofits and community groups to private businesses and public agencies. “Communication creates alignment,” he said. “When departments operate independently without understanding how their work affects others, small issues can grow into much larger problems. Good communication helps organizations solve challenges before they become obstacles.”

As CEO of DELGO Community Transit, Miccarelli works closely with staff, community partners, and stakeholders to strengthen organizational coordination and improve service delivery. He says building reliable systems depends on creating an environment where information moves efficiently across the organization. “Our goal is not simply to communicate more,” Miccarelli said. “Our goal is to communicate clearly. Meetings should have purpose. Expectations should be understood. People should know who owns each responsibility and how decisions are made.”

Miccarelli credits much of his approach to lessons learned during his military service. “In the military, everyone understands that communication can directly affect outcomes,” he said. “That experience taught me the importance of preparation, accountability, and making sure every member of the team understands both their role and the larger mission.” He says those principles translate naturally into civilian organizations. “Whether you're serving a community, running a business, or leading a nonprofit, people perform better when they understand why their work matters,” Miccarelli said. “Communication creates confidence, and confidence allows teams to work more effectively together.”

Rather than viewing communication as solely a leadership responsibility, Miccarelli believes every employee contributes to organizational success. “Good communication is everyone's responsibility,” he said. “It means asking questions when something isn't clear, sharing information that helps others do their jobs, and keeping the mission ahead of individual priorities.”

Miccarelli encourages organizations looking to strengthen operations to focus on several practical steps: establish clear goals that every department understands; create consistent communication between teams rather than only during problems; encourage employees to ask questions and provide constructive feedback; document processes so responsibilities remain clear as organizations grow; and regularly evaluate internal systems to identify opportunities for improvement.

He believes organizations often achieve their greatest improvements through steady refinement rather than dramatic change. “Operational excellence rarely comes from one big decision,” Miccarelli said. “It comes from hundreds of small improvements that help people work together more effectively every day.”
