Custom vs Designer Engagement Rings: A La Jolla Bridal Jeweler Weighs In

For couples shopping for an engagement ring, the decision often comes down to a recognizable designer brand like Tiffany, Cartier, Verragio, or Tacori, versus a custom-built ring. While designer rings carry cachet, many buyers question how much of the price goes to the diamond and craftsmanship versus the label. Carl Blackburn, owner of C. Blackburn Jewelers in La Jolla, says his clients frequently fall into the second camp—those who appreciate designer aesthetics but want more control over proportions, metal choice, wearability, and cost.

"Sometimes a client just loves that a ring is a Tiffany, and that is a fine reason to buy it," Blackburn said. "But most of the time, what they actually love is the look—and once you separate those two things, custom starts to make a lot more sense." Blackburn emphasizes that custom design is about identifying what the client truly values—such as a vintage detail, a halo setting, or a dramatic silhouette—and creating a unique piece around those elements, from delicate halos to lowered settings for everyday wear.

The concern with custom work is whether the final ring will match expectations. Blackburn's studio addresses this with a detailed design and approval process. After selecting a gemstone and metal, a three-dimensional CAD model is created, allowing clients to view the ring from every angle and request revisions. A full-size resin prototype is then produced for try-on, eliminating guesswork about height, proportions, and fit before casting. "The resin model is really where the guesswork disappears," Blackburn noted. "You put it on your hand and you know." Once approved, the ring is cast, hand-set, polished, and engraved within two to three weeks.

Diamond sourcing is a key economic factor. With over three decades of experience, Blackburn leverages relationships with cutters, wholesalers, and estate specialists. He says buyers often spend 15% to 30% less on a natural diamond of comparable quality compared to designer boutiques, with savings reaching thousands of dollars on stones of two carats or more. Lab-grown diamonds offer even greater savings, costing about 5% of a natural diamond's price. This allows clients to opt for a larger stone, upgrade from gold to platinum, add hand engraving, or invest in more detailed setting work.

Custom doesn't necessarily mean cheaper; the diamond quality, metal type, and workmanship all affect price. The distinction is how the budget is allocated. "Custom should not be thought of as the bargain version of a designer ring," Blackburn said. "The better question is what you receive for the same total investment. With custom, a larger share can often go toward the diamond, the materials, and the work itself." Custom design also allows for projects like incorporating heirloom stones, reconstructing damaged pieces from photographs, or transforming antique rings into bridal sets.

As an appointment-only studio, C. Blackburn Jewelers provides direct access to the designer, maintaining a 5.0-star rating on both Google and Yelp. Blackburn believes neither option is universally superior; a designer ring may justify its premium when brand identity matters, while custom becomes compelling for those valuing individuality and budget control.
