Drug-Free World Reaches Thousands with Prevention Education at Los Angeles Heritage Festival

The Drug-Free World Foundation brought its drug-prevention education campaign to the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Heritage Festival on June 27–28, reaching more than 1,000 festival attendees and FIFA World Cup fans with educational materials promoting informed, drug-free choices.

The two-day event took place at El Pueblo de Los Angeles, the historic 44-acre living history museum and monument in Downtown Los Angeles. The festival coincided with a FIFA World Cup watch party and Fan Zone taking place across the street at Union Station, giving Drug-Free World volunteers an opportunity to reach a diverse audience of Angelenos, families, soccer fans and visitors.

Thousands of people attended the festival over the weekend, with people touring the Drug-Free World Mobile Exhibit. Through outreach at the festival and the nearby FIFA Fan Zone, volunteers reached more than 1,000 people and distributed Truth About Drugs educational booklets to festivalgoers and soccer fans.

The campaign generated meaningful conversations with people who had personal and professional experience with the effects of drug abuse. One attendee, a retired social worker who had spent more than 30 years working with teenage girls who were pregnant and struggling with drugs, expressed her support for the educational materials. She took 200 Truth About Drugs booklets to place in her church for parishioners to access.

A physician's assistant who visited the exhibit also expressed strong support for the program. After learning about the Drug-Free World curriculum, the healthcare professional visited the organization's website and ordered an Educator's Kit for further use.

The exhibit also provided an opportunity for Spanish-speaking community members to share personal stories about loved ones affected by drug use or who had lost their lives to drugs.

Drug-Free World volunteers also developed relationships with local businesses along Olvera Street. Several store owners allowed educational displays to be placed on their counters and on food trucks, extending the reach of the campaign beyond the festival exhibit itself.

By the end of the weekend, Drug-Free World had reached approximately 1,000 people through its outreach activities, provided tours of the Mobile Exhibit to attendees, and received signatures from individuals pledging to live a drug-free life.

In total, 13,700 Truth About Drugs booklets were distributed, and the campaign resulted in a new community partnership that will help extend access to drug-prevention education at future events.

The initiative underscores the importance of community-based education in addressing drug abuse. By engaging with diverse audiences at public events, organizations like Drug-Free World can directly inform individuals and families about the risks associated with drug use, empowering them to make healthier choices.
