Fifth International Healthcare Week to Showcase Hong Kong as Medical Technology and Investment Hub

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) will hold the fifth edition of International Healthcare Week from 11 to 31 May, with two flagship events—the Asia Summit on Global Health (ASGH) and the Hong Kong International Medical and Healthcare Fair (Medical Fair)—aimed at highlighting Hong Kong’s role as a medical technology and investment hub. The events, taking place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, will cover the entire medical and healthcare industry chain, from technology R&D and investment matching to medical equipment manufacturing and services.

According to a press release, the ASGH will be held on 11 and 12 May, while the Medical Fair will run from 11 to 13 May. Sophia Chong, Executive Director of the HKTDC, stated that the medical and healthcare landscape is undergoing rapid transformation, and Hong Kong, leveraging its status as an international financial centre and its unique position bridging the Chinese Mainland and the world, serves as an ideal platform for scientific excellence, strategic investment, and international trade. The events align with the National 15th Five-Year Plan, focusing on high-growth areas such as biopharmaceuticals, AI-empowered healthcare, the silver economy, and traditional Chinese medicine modernization.

The sixth ASGH, themed “Fuelling Healthcare Breakthroughs,” will feature a prestigious line-up of international health officials, scientists, industry experts, and investors. The opening session will include welcome remarks by Prof Frederick S Ma, Chairman of the HKTDC, and opening remarks by John Lee, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, followed by special remarks by Prof Zeng Yixin, Vice Minister of the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China. Plenary sessions will address pandemic preparedness and cross-sector collaboration to commercialize research outcomes. A key highlight is the Dialogue with Global Pioneer in Health session featuring 2013 Nobel Prize Laureate in Chemistry, Prof Michael Levitt, who will share his journey in scientific discovery and the transformative impact of technology on healthcare.

The summit also introduces a dedicated CSO Insights session on the second day, where chief scientific officers from leading biotech and pharmaceutical companies will discuss scientific strategy and partnerships. Thematic sessions will cover AI in healthcare, silver health, and the National 15th Five-Year Plan’s emphasis on traditional Chinese medicine innovation. Topics include sustainable healthcare systems, gene and cell therapy, rare disease treatments, medical robotics, and IP financing strategies.

In addition to sessions, the ASGH will feature the Business Hub and InnoHealth Showcase, presenting innovations from some 180 companies across 11 countries and regions. Exhibitors include delegations from Australia, Finland, the UK, Xiamen, and Jiangsu, as well as startups from the Innovation and Technology Commission, Cyberport, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks, and five local universities. The Project Pitching session and ASGH Deal-making will facilitate one-to-one meetings between startups and investors. Medical and healthcare enterprises can also access the “GoGlobal Connect” Zone and Business of Healthcare Advisory Zone for advice on overseas expansion and fundraising.

The 17th Hong Kong International Medical and Healthcare Fair, themed “Innovations Boosting Smart Health Experience,” will gather some 300 exhibitors from 10 countries and regions, including new participants from Macao, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Vietnam, and the United States. The fair will focus on three key areas: MedTech, GeronTech, and Preventive Healthcare. Notable products include a smart health wearable watch integrating Chinese and Western medicine, an augmented reality surgical platform for orthopaedic surgeons, and a world-first smart knee brace using AI and wearable technology. The fair also includes over 50 themed forums and seminars. The event adopts an “EXHIBITION+” hybrid model, with a physical fair from 11 to 13 May and the “Click2Match” smart business matching platform available from 4 May until 20.

International Healthcare Week will run from 11 to 31 May, covering 17 healthcare-related activities. The events aim to promote innovation and investment exchange in the Asian healthcare industry, creating synergies and driving Hong Kong’s development as a regional medical innovation hub.
