JCB Partners with Hanoi Metro to Launch Contactless Payment by Early 2027

JCB International Co., Ltd., the international operations subsidiary of JCB Co., Ltd., Japan’s only international payment brand, and Hanoi Metro One Member Limited Liability Company (Hanoi Metro) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on introducing JCB transit across Hanoi’s urban railway network. The agreement, announced via NEWMEDIAWIRE, sets the stage for a service launch in early 2027 that will allow JCB Cardmembers to tap their contactless cards or compatible devices directly at metro fare gates.

The introduction of JCB transit in Hanoi represents a significant step in JCB’s broader strategy to expand contactless payment solutions for public transportation and to support the development of cashless payment in Vietnam. For international visitors, particularly travelers from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and other markets where JCB cards are widely issued, the service promises a faster, more convenient, and seamless travel experience. Instead of purchasing separate transit tickets or carrying cash, JCB Cardmembers will be able to use a payment method they already know and trust.

Takumi Takahashi, Executive Vice President of JCB International Co., Ltd., commented, “JCB International is delighted to collaborate with Hanoi Metro to introduce JCB transit in Hanoi. We hope this service will provide greater convenience to JCB Cardmembers and contribute to the development of a modern and cashless public transportation ecosystem in Vietnam.”

The collaboration is expected to have a meaningful impact on both the local transportation landscape and the broader payment industry in Vietnam. As Hanoi continues to modernize its urban railway system, the adoption of contactless payment technology can help reduce congestion at ticket counters, lower cash-handling costs, and improve the overall passenger experience. For JCB, the partnership strengthens its presence in Southeast Asia and aligns with its international growth strategy, which includes forming alliances with leading banks and financial institutions globally. With an acceptance network of about 72 million merchants and more than 181 million cardmembers, primarily in Asia, JCB is well-positioned to leverage this new transit use case to increase cardmember engagement and merchant coverage.

For Hanoi Metro, the integration of JCB contactless payments could attract more international riders, particularly tourists from Japan and other JCB-heavy markets, thereby boosting ridership and revenue. The service also supports Vietnam’s broader push toward a cashless society, a goal that has gained momentum in recent years. As the two organizations work closely to complete necessary preparations, the early 2027 target underscores a shared commitment to innovation and customer convenience.
