LifeStraw by Vestergaard, in partnership with SierrAfrica Diaspora Connect (SADC), has completed the installation of five LifeStraw water filtration systems serving schools on historic Tasso Island in Sierra Leone, West Africa. The project provides safe drinking water to 540 schoolchildren, marking the first phase of SADC's long-term resilience strategy that combines clean water, renewable energy, heritage tourism, and economic development to create a self-sustaining community.
Tasso Island, located across the estuary from Bunce Island, holds significant historical importance in the transatlantic slave trade and shares ancestral ties with Gullah Geechee communities of the U.S. Lowcountry and descendants across the African diaspora. Before the installation, residents relied on untreated rainwater and surface water contaminated with bacteria, viruses, parasites, and sediment, exposing families to preventable waterborne diseases. The new water filters now provide schools with a dependable source of safe drinking water.

LifeStraw donated the five filters and provided hands-on technical training to ensure the community can maintain them. Building local capacity, not simply installing infrastructure, is a cornerstone of SADC's development philosophy.
The clean water initiative builds on a 2021 solar power installation in schools, places of worship, and the clinic, and serves as the foundation of a broader resilience strategy that integrates clean water, sanitation, renewable energy, digital connectivity, workforce development, locally owned enterprises, and heritage tourism. Together, these investments are designed to improve quality of life while creating sustainable economic opportunity for future generations. Rather than relying solely on charitable contributions, SADC is creating a model in which heritage tourism and diaspora investment generate recurring resources to finance community development.
Central to that vision is SADC's 10-Day Heritage & Legacy Tour, scheduled for March 7–16, 2027. More than a cultural journey, the tour is both a fundraising initiative and an economic development strategy. Participants will travel throughout Sierra Leone—including Freetown, Bunce Island, Tasso Island, Bo, Senehun Village, Taiama, and Mozza Beach—while supporting local guides, artisans, transportation providers, and community enterprises. The tour includes Freedom Day on March 11, commemorating the arrival of 1,196 Black Loyalists from Nova Scotia in 1792. The celebration will unite descendants from across the African diaspora—including Gullah Geechee from the United States, Black Loyalists from Nova Scotia, Jamaican Maroons, and Krio descendants from Sierra Leone, the United Kingdom, the Caribbean, and North America—in a shared homecoming honoring the resilience and legacy of their ancestors.
Deposits from the Heritage & Legacy Tour will help finance the next phase of the Tasso Island Resilience Initiative, including expanded clean water systems, sanitation improvements, digital connectivity, renewable energy, education, and community enterprise development.
Beginning in August 2026, SADC will launch the Freedom to Future Webinar Series, a global program designed to connect Sierra Leone's government, business leaders, development partners, and the global African diaspora. Each webinar will spotlight a priority investment sector—including tourism, agriculture, education, healthcare, digital innovation, and trade—while showcasing government reforms, investment opportunities, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The webinar series will build momentum toward the March 2027 Heritage & Legacy Tour and culminate in a Business & Investment Forum in Freetown, where participants will explore investment-ready opportunities and partnerships that advance Sierra Leone's economic development.
