Mitch Gould's Retail Journey: From Brooklyn Roots to Home Depot, Walmart, and Amazon

Mitch Gould's career in retail distribution and manufacturing began in Brooklyn, where his family's deep roots in the consumer products business provided an early education in how products move from factory floors to store shelves. His grandfather operated a factory in Brooklyn and a showroom in the Empire State Building, and his father, Jerry, carried on the tradition in manufacturing and distribution. Those formative experiences instilled in Gould an understanding of product development, sales, and the relationships that open doors in the retail industry.

Over more than 25 years, Gould has worked with some of the largest retailers in the United States, including Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart, Costco, CVS, Walgreens, GNC, and Amazon. His expertise spans multiple product categories, from hardware and household goods to health, wellness, and sports nutrition. This breadth of experience has given him a unique perspective on the differing requirements of each retail channel, from product selection and packaging to pricing, logistics, and merchandising.

Gould's work with major brands such as Rubbermaid, Sunbeam, Igloo, and Miracle-Gro has helped these companies secure distribution in competitive retail environments. He emphasizes that success with any retailer requires a deep understanding of what buyers are looking for and how to make a product work for that specific store. "Every retailer is different," Gould said. "You have to understand what their buyers are looking for, what their customers want, and how to make the product work for that particular store. That's something you learn through experience, not from a textbook."

A significant chapter in Gould's career involved Amazon's developing sports nutrition business. Working with Muscle Foods and Amazon buyers, he helped introduce more than 100 sports nutrition brands and products to the online marketplace, contributing to the early growth of a category that is now a staple of Amazon's health and wellness offerings. This experience demonstrated his ability to apply traditional distribution principles—product selection, pricing, inventory, reliable fulfillment, and understanding customer demand—to the e-commerce model.

"When I started in this business, everything revolved around getting products onto store shelves," Gould said. "Then Amazon came along and changed the retail landscape. I had the opportunity to help build its sports nutrition category, bringing more than 100 brands and products to the platform. It was a different way of doing business, but the relationships, product knowledge, and distribution experience I'd developed over the years were just as valuable."

Gould's career reflects the broader transformation of American retail, from the dominance of brick-and-mortar chains to the rise of e-commerce platforms that enable brands to reach consumers nationwide. For manufacturers and entrepreneurs seeking distribution opportunities, his journey underscores the importance of adapting to new retail models while maintaining the core principles of relationship-building and product knowledge. As retail continues to evolve, Gould's experience offers a roadmap for brands looking to navigate the complexities of national distribution. His story illustrates how a foundation in traditional manufacturing and distribution can translate into success across generations of American retail, from Home Depot and Walmart to Amazon.
