The DFW Car & Toy Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, is now home to an exceptionally rare piece of automotive history: a 1951 Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet by Karmann. Built on July 17, 1951, in Osnabrück, Germany, this early Type 15 Cabriolet is one of only 165 known surviving examples worldwide, making it a significant find for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
The Beetle's origins date back to 1937, when the vision of a "people's car" was first conceived under the name Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH. Although World War II interrupted its mass production, the Beetle emerged as a postwar phenomenon, symbolizing rebirth and practicality. By the late 1940s, Volkswagen expanded its lineup to include cabriolet models, offering open-air elegance to a public eager for optimism and style.
Karmann, a legendary coachbuilder, first prototyped its cabriolet in 1949. Unlike the Hebmüller 2+2-seater, the Karmann Cabriolet featured a true four-passenger configuration with ample rear legroom, expanded luggage capacity, and a neatly folding soft top. Volkswagen formally approved the model, and production began with chassis sourced from Wolfsburg and final assembly in Osnabrück.
The 1951 Beetle Cabriolet on display is a first-series Type 15 A, produced between 1949 and 1952. It is distinguished by its split rear window and pre-1953 detailing, which are highly prized by collectors. Finished in an elegant early-era color palette, the car exemplifies the craftsmanship that defined Karmann's legacy.
"This is one of those cars that stops collectors in their tracks," said Ron Sturgeon, founder of the DFW Car & Toy Museum. "The 1951 Karmann Cabriolet is more than just a Beetle—it's a symbol of rebirth, optimism, and craftsmanship at a time when the world needed it most."
Visitors to the museum can view this rare cabriolet alongside over 200 classic vehicles and 3,000 vintage toys and collectibles. The museum, located at 2550 McMillan Parkway in North Fort Worth, offers free parking and admission, and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. It also provides secure climate-controlled car storage and event facilities, and is dog friendly.
The presence of this 1951 Volkswagen Cabriolet not only enriches the museum's collection but also offers the public a tangible connection to a pivotal era in automotive history. Its rarity and historical significance make it a must-see for car enthusiasts and historians alike.
