VolitionRx Limited (NYSE American: VNRX) announced the release of a new clinical study demonstrating the prognostic value of its Nu.Q Cancer Assay in patients newly diagnosed with lung cancer. Conducted with researchers and clinicians at France’s Hospices Civils de Lyon, the real-world study found that levels of the assay’s H3K27Me3-nucleosome biomarker were associated with cancer stage, overall survival and progression-free survival. A prognostic model incorporating the biomarker and clinical factors successfully stratified patients into low- and high-risk mortality groups. The paper is currently under peer review.
The findings support the potential use of Nu.Q Cancer to help personalize treatment selection and improve clinical decision-making. Volition said that clinical certification of the test at Hospices Civils de Lyon has been completed and that it is preparing a reimbursement submission in France under the RIHN framework. The company also noted it is pursuing commercialization opportunities with hospital networks and potential licensing partners internationally, with reimbursement representing a key milestone toward routine clinical use in France.
Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer death worldwide, and tools that can accurately predict patient outcomes are critical for tailoring therapy. The Nu.Q Cancer Assay measures nucleosomes, which are DNA-protein complexes released into the blood during cell death. The H3K27Me3 modification is an epigenetic marker that has been linked to cancer progression. By quantifying this biomarker, the assay provides information that could help oncologists identify patients who may benefit from more aggressive treatment versus those who might be candidates for less intensive approaches.
The study’s real-world design, using data from routine clinical practice, enhances the generalizability of the results. Volition’s focus on epigenetic diagnostics represents a shift from traditional genetic testing, potentially offering a simpler, cost-effective blood test that can be easily integrated into clinical workflows. The company is also developing assays for other diseases, including sepsis, through detection of NETosis.
VolitionRx is a multinational company focused on advancing the science of epigenetics. Its research and development activities are centered in Belgium, with an innovation laboratory and office in the U.S. and an office in London. The company is dedicated to saving lives and improving outcomes for people and animals with life-altering diseases through earlier detection, as well as disease and treatment monitoring.
