Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (TSX.V: VM) (OTC Pink: VYYRF) has announced significant progress in its proprietary Mueller iodine extraction process, which is designed to recover high-purity iodine from oilfield brine. The company reported that recent laboratory work produced iodine at 99.8% purity with an overall process recovery exceeding 90%. These results validate the process using real oilfield brine from the Anadarko and Permian Basins, marking a critical step toward establishing a domestic iodine supply for the North American radiology contrast media market.
The company has established a laboratory and fabrication site in Houston, Texas, where it has demonstrated the process under controlled conditions. The lab has also generated clean brine suitable for disposal or reinjection, consistent with zero-liquid-discharge objectives. A field-capable pilot unit has been constructed and is scheduled to begin field testing in the coming weeks, with operations planned for September 2026. This pilot unit is sized to treat up to 80,000 liters per day on a batch-continuous basis, and its deployment will provide operating data under real-world conditions using unaltered oilfield brine. Voyageur views this as a critical distinction for any technology intended for commercial deployment.
Key achievements highlighted by the company include continuous operation using real oilfield brine feed, validation of key process parameters supporting scale-up, and completion of a preliminary design basis for a 200 metric tons per year plant. Additionally, techno-economic and environmental validation supports a low-cost OPEX and environmental profile. The company is also finalizing process systems for iodine polishing, prilling, and packaging, and further defining the modular field unit and central processing hub configuration.
The Mueller process holds significant implications for the energy and medical imaging industries. For oil and gas operators and produced water midstream companies, produced brine represents a largely untapped resource, with billions of barrels handled and disposed of each year at meaningful cost. Only a small fraction of the iodine they contain is ever recovered. Voyageur aims to be the first company to change that equation by building what it believes will be the first economically profitable, field-proven iodine extraction process. This could help lead the industry toward brine valorization, turning a waste product into a valuable resource.
Strategically, Voyageur’s vertically integrated approach aims to improve supply-chain security, reduce reliance on imported raw materials, and lower operating costs for producing medical imaging contrast agents. Iodine is a critical raw material used in iodinated contrast media, and a domestic source could mitigate supply chain vulnerabilities. The company plans to develop iodine production capacity of up to 1,000 tonnes per year to support its future iodine-based contrast pharmaceutical production requirements.
