Acclaimed author Xuemo's novel Wild Fox Ridge and short story collection The Sound of Broad Beans Late at Night are now available in English on Amazon, bringing the landscapes and cultures of western China to a global audience. The releases are significant for readers seeking diverse literary voices and for the preservation of a rapidly changing region's cultural heritage.
Wild Fox Ridge is a work of magical realism that challenges the reader's intellect and ignites the imagination. Drawing on prismatic perspectives of polyphonic narratives, it weaves an intricate and captivating tale. A century ago, a Mongolian and a Chinese caravan vanished into the mystical expanse of Wild Fox Ridge. Decades later, through twenty-seven midnight 'dialogues,' the narrator summons the spirits of the lost travelers, each recalling fragments of that fateful night. Yet, despite recounting the same event, no two spirits remember it the same way. The novel blurs the boundaries between life and death, north and south, good and evil, human and camels, producing a unique chorus of souls. A work of rare depth and refinement, it rewards reflection and invites readers to return to its pages again and again. The English edition was co-translated by Howard Goldblatt and Sylvia Li-Chun Lin, acclaimed translators of Nobel Prize-winning authors. Additionally, Xuemo's story collection The Sound of Broad Beans Late at Night: Mysterious Interviews Along the Silk Road has officially launched on Amazon Kindle. Shortly after its release, the book achieved remarkable rankings, reaching No. 1 in three Amazon Kindle categories: Single-Author Short Stories, Contemporary Short Stories, and Literary Short Stories, drawing attention from readers worldwide. The English edition is jointly translated by renowned sinologists and translators Howard Goldblatt and Sylvia Li-chun Lin. It is published and globally distributed by Ruxue International Media Inc.
Structured around a series of interviews between a Western Chinese writer and a Western female sinologist, the collection uses the Silk Road as its narrative thread, unfolding through 19 stories deeply rooted in the landscapes and cultures of western China. The stories explore the lives of men and women, the natural world, local customs, and spiritual traditions of the region. Rich in the distinctive atmosphere of western China, the collection offers vivid portraits of ordinary people's inner lives and everyday experiences. Through its compelling narratives, it brings to international readers the unique cultural character, human stories, and profound sense of life found along the historic Silk Road.
In the afterword, Xuemo reflects on the inspiration behind the collection. His intention, he explains, was to capture an authentic portrait of western China—a world that is rapidly disappearing. The old western landscapes of the Silk Road have faded, the hometown preserved in memory is gradually vanishing, and many precious cultural traditions and ways of life are becoming things of the past. 'Those who never forget will eventually hear an echo. I am waiting for that echo.' This reflection captures the emotional heart of the collection: a deep attachment to one's homeland and a profound appreciation for the cultural heritage and human spirit of western China. Through these 19 stories, Xuemo seeks to preserve a world at the crossroads of memory, history, and cultural transformation, allowing its voices to resonate with readers around the globe.
