To ensure a durable fix, Young's saw-cut and removed the damaged asphalt at both locations, then paved the repaired areas with three inches of new asphalt before laying the overlay across the rest of the lot. This approach addresses the root cause of the sinking, unlike simply overlaying the existing surface, which would cover the problem temporarily and likely allow it to recur.
The remainder of the lot received a full overlay, which included cleaning and preparation, transitional milling at lock-in points, a tack coat, a base layer of asphalt, and a two-inch wearing course. Transitional milling grinds down the existing pavement where new asphalt meets old, ensuring a smooth transition without a raised lip. The wearing course is the top layer exposed to traffic, weather, and plowing, and it sits on the base layer laid during the same paving process.
