The ambitious $100 million project has already secured significant financial backing, including a three-year, $900,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation and $250,000 from the City of Chicago for feasibility studies. The trail will utilize the Kenwood 'L' embankment, creating an elevated park for walking, running, and biking that commemorates the area's rich history related to the Great Black Migration.
Community leaders anticipate the trail will serve multiple purposes, including improving local health and wellness, stimulating economic growth, and preserving the neighborhood's cultural heritage. The project is comparable in scope to the popular Bloomingdale 606 Trail, which opened in 2016 and significantly transformed its surrounding urban landscape.
City and county officials are expected to invest more than $5.5 million in the project's initial construction phase.
