The Peru Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai is drawing international attention with its captivating exhibition, "The Mochicas, Sovereigns of the Desert," which celebrates the rich cultural legacy of the ancient Mochica civilization.
The exhibit features exquisite replicas of the Lord of Sipán's jewelry, created by local Lambayeque artisans, and includes a life-sized representation of a Mochica ruler. Developed through a collaboration between PROMPERÚ and the Sipán Board of Trustees, the display offers visitors an immersive glimpse into one of the 20th century's most significant archaeological discoveries.
Renowned artist Edilberto Mérida Pilares contributed two mannequins designed with facial features of modern-day Mochica descendants, further emphasizing the living connection to this ancient culture. Artisans Armando Gil, Segundo Gonzales, and Johnny Aldana meticulously recreated royal ornaments that showcase the sophisticated craftsmanship of the Mochica elite.
The exhibition not only preserves historical artifacts but also demonstrates how contemporary Peruvians maintain their cultural heritage. By presenting these treasures at a global event, Peru communicates its rich historical narrative and national identity to an international audience.
The Peru Pavilion's inclusion in Time Out's top five international pavilions underscores the exhibition's remarkable storytelling and cultural significance. Under the theme "Infinite Possibilities," the display successfully bridges Peru's past and present, offering visitors a profound understanding of the country's cultural depth.
