Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are experiencing a digital transformation, with artificial intelligence (AI), social media, and cybersecurity emerging as critical drivers of operational efficiency and market expansion, according to Verizon Business's latest State of Small Business Survey.
The survey of 600 U.S. SMBs highlights a profound technological adoption trend, with 38% of businesses now integrating AI into their operations. Nearly a quarter of these businesses are using AI for marketing, social media, and written communications, while 25% leverage the technology to enhance cybersecurity measures.
Social media platforms continue to play a pivotal role in business strategy, with Facebook remaining the most popular platform and 76% of SMBs acknowledging its positive business impact. Notably, 58% of surveyed businesses are now active on TikTok, demonstrating a willingness to engage with emerging digital channels.
Cybersecurity concerns are increasingly prominent, with 52% of SMBs recognizing that business growth correlates with higher cyberattack risks. Consequently, 47% have invested in technologies to improve their digital security infrastructure over the past year.
The survey also reveals interesting workforce management insights, with 56% of businesses believing AI can help offset headcount challenges and 53% seeing potential in AI for staff retention. Nineteen percent are already using AI for recruitment and talent sourcing.
As technology becomes more accessible, SMBs are positioning themselves to thrive in an increasingly digital landscape, recognizing that technological adaptation is no longer optional but essential for competitive survival.
