The City of Elizabeth, New Jersey, unveiled an honorary street sign dedicated to L. Ron Hubbard, marking the location where the global Dianetics movement originated in 1950. The ceremony brought together community leaders, elected officials, residents, and guests to recognize the historical significance of the site on Aberdeen Road. New Jersey State Senator Joseph Cryan, Elizabeth Council President Manny Grova, Jr., and Rev. Massimo Parrino, President of the L. Ron Hubbard Foundation, delivered remarks commemorating the occasion. Elizabeth Councilman Frank Mazza and former Councilman Carlos Alma, who initiated efforts for the dedication over two decades ago, were also in attendance among more than one hundred guests.
Council President Manny Grova, Jr. noted the enduring impact of L. Ron Hubbard, stating the gathering demonstrated his lasting legacy despite the cold weather. The event underscores Elizabeth's role in a movement that has influenced millions worldwide. Following the publication of Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health on May 9, 1950, the book achieved an unprecedented 28-week run on the New York Times bestseller list. Beginning in June 1950, individuals from across the United States and beyond traveled to 42 Aberdeen Road to visit Hubbard's home, where he established the first Dianetics Foundation.
At this location, Hubbard delivered the initial public lectures and demonstrations of Dianetics, sharing principles aimed at personal improvement and the betterment of civilization. State Senator Joseph Cryan praised the growth of the movement within the community, emphasizing the significance of the dedication as a step toward a better world. The honorary sign unveiling follows the recent restoration of the property at 42 Aberdeen Road, completed in April 2025. The restoration meticulously returned the home to its 1950 appearance, both inside and out, preserving it as it was during Hubbard's residence.
The L. Ron Hubbard Foundation, a nonprofit public benefit organization, works to preserve the accurate historical record of Hubbard's research into the human mind and spirit. The foundation encourages applying his discoveries to address social and scientific challenges and uplift diverse cultures. This dedication not only honors Hubbard's contributions but also highlights Elizabeth's historical influence, connecting local heritage to global developments in personal development and spiritual philosophy. The event reinforces the city's place in history, where a simple street now symbolizes the origins of a worldwide movement.
