Huawei has released the HUAWEI Mate XT 2 | ULTIMATE DESIGN, a trifold smartphone that the company says is the slimmest and largest foldable in the industry. Announced via Media OutReach Newswire, the device launched on September 7 and became available for purchase on September 12, starting at RMB 19,999. It is the first smartphone to run HarmonyOS 7 and the first to feature Huawei’s LogicFolding Tau (τ) chip, the Kirin 9050 Pro, marking a significant step in semiconductor design.
The Mate XT 2’s foldable wing-like form allows it to open into a tablet, with a hinge that is the first of its kind and a screen just 3.5mm thick when unfolded. The cover screen spans 6.5 inches, boosting the screen-to-body ratio from 86.4% to 92.8%, and offers 70% better anti-reflection. A world-first Smart Shield Privacy Screen on a foldable uses two independent pixel sets within the 10.2-inch display at a micro-pitch of 9 μm, enabling a switch from wide to narrow viewing angles without compromising resolution.
The Kirin 9050 Pro chip represents a major breakthrough in semiconductor design. With Moore’s law reaching its physical limit, Huawei’s HiSilicon team developed LogicFolding, a 3D integration technique that stacks transistors to reduce distance between them. In the Kirin 9050 Pro, transistor density rose from approximately 155 to 238 million transistors per square millimetre—an increase equivalent to what was achieved in the previous three years using geometric shrinking. Contrary to previous assumptions, stacking transistors did not increase heat; instead, LogicFolding chips run cooler per unit of work by reducing the energy used to move data. This addresses a key challenge in mobile devices and large AI clusters, where up to 80% of energy is spent on data transmission rather than processing.
The breakthrough builds on the τ (Tau) Scaling Law proposed by He Tingbo, President of Huawei’s HiSilicon division, in May. The law measures chip performance by time rather than size, reflecting what consumers actually value: faster task completion, video sharing, and game loading. He Tingbo was recently named one of the world’s leading AI innovators by Time Magazine for this work.
HarmonyOS 7, debuting on the Mate XT 2, is 42% more powerful than the previous generation. The device also introduces industry-first ECG analysis on a smartphone. Users can hold both side frames while the phone is unfolded to capture a 30-second ECG signal, generating detailed reports to help identify Sinus Rhythm, Atrial Fibrillation, and Premature Beats.
The launch underscores Huawei’s substantial research and development commitment. More than half of its employees—over 100,000 people—work in R&D, and the company holds 160,000 active patents worldwide. In the first half of 2026 alone, Huawei’s R&D investment exceeded RMB 121 billion, accounting for 25.94% of revenue, up 25.2% year on year. This investment has delivered industry-leading innovation, and the Mate XT 2’s combination of foldable engineering and chip design could influence the broader smartphone and semiconductor industries. As geometric scaling becomes more challenging and costly, Huawei’s LogicFolding approach offers an alternative path for performance gains, potentially impacting how future chips are designed and manufactured. For consumers, the Mate XT 2 delivers a larger, more durable foldable display, enhanced privacy features, and advanced health monitoring, setting a new benchmark for premium smartphones.
