Retired healthcare executive and author Rick Wilton has released his new devotional, Every Breath, offering a compassionate perspective on navigating life's most difficult and unwanted seasons. Published by Clay Bridges Press, the book aims to help readers find strength and courage through God's Word, prayer, and community support.
Drawing from decades of personal experience, Wilton addresses the harsh realities of unexpected diagnoses, broken dreams, grief, and uncertainty. Rather than offering superficial encouragement, Every Breath speaks candidly about suffering while pointing readers toward hope found in Christ. 'Every one of us will eventually face a journey we never would have chosen,' Wilton said. 'My prayer is that readers will discover they are not walking those roads alone. God is present, He is faithful, and He can use even our hardest seasons to deepen our trust in Him and bring glory to His name.'
The devotional's authenticity sets it apart, as Wilton deliberately avoids 'candy coating' the realities of pain. 'I wanted to tell the truth about what it looks like to walk through an unwanted season while holding tightly to God,' he explained. 'My hope is that readers see honesty, transparency, and ultimately, God's faithfulness.'
Wilton's writing journey began more than fifty years ago when a tenth-grade English teacher recognized his gift. Although he briefly considered journalism in college, life led him to a career in healthcare leadership. The desire to write never disappeared, and he now views writing as an act of obedience. 'If I had to describe my writing journey in three words, they would be: inspired by God,' he said.
Facing challenges like writer's block, Wilton finds solutions through what he calls 'mental health and prayer walks.' 'Every time I step away and spend time with the Lord, He faithfully meets me there,' he noted.
A native West Virginian and graduate of Marshall University, Wilton spent his professional career as a healthcare executive before retiring to write, spend time with family, and engage in ministry. He has been married to his wife, Sandy, for more than forty years and is a father and grandfather.
For aspiring writers, Wilton offers simple advice: 'Do the work. Follow the prompting of your heart and the Holy Spirit. Write every day. You never know how God may use your words to encourage someone else.'
